Led by acclaimed drummer, composer, and educator Owen Howard, BYMP’s Jazz Program offers middle and high school students the chance to explore jazz in a creative, collaborative setting.

Open to students who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet and other woodwinds, bass (upright or electric), guitar, piano, or drums, our ensembles focus on developing strong technique, ensemble playing, and improvisation skills.

Students work on a wide range of repertoire -- from standards to contemporary jazz -- and receive coaching from visiting professional musicians throughout the season.

Improvisation is at the heart of what we do. Students learn to listen deeply, construct solos, and respond to the rhythm section, gaining confidence and a deep understanding of the jazz tradition.

Participation in our jazz program is a full-year commitment (September–June), including weekly rehearsals and 2–3 concerts. Students are accepted by audition, with rolling admissions as space allows.

To apply, visit our Audition/Register page or email info@bymp.org for more information.
